In this Bible Study on the Rapture as we call it we shall see why we do not
use the term the ‘Secret Rapture’ which is the most well-known term used.
Let us begin this study by reading the following Scriptures from the Bible
which I think are relevant to this subject.
2 Thessalonians 2: 1-12
1 “NOW we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by
spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ
is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come
except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin to be
revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or
that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God,
showing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now
letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall
consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the
brightness of his coming.
9 Even Him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all
power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish;
because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they
should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had
pleasure in unrighteousness.”
You may greatly benefit by reading the entire chapter. For our study on the
Rapture, here firstly follows a short introduction.
There is great uncertainty amongst the children of God concerning the
Second Coming of Christ and in which time-relationship this glorious event
stands with regard to the Rapture and the Tribulation.
Will the Christian believers be raptured by the Lord and taken into heaven
before the Great Tribulation comes upon earth and then return back to
earth with Him when it is all over? Or will they pass through the Tribulation
and then be raptured to meet him in the air while He is coming down to
reign on earth?
The first view of course immediately creates the necessity that there should
be two phases to the Second Coming of Christ:
1 a secret coming for His saints; and
2 then a visible return to earth with His saints.
We are unable to find a confirmation of this view that requires the two
phases of the Second Coming of Christ anywhere in Scripture. Let us do
some research from where this theory of a ‘secret Rapture’ originated.
Origin of the ‘Secret Rapture’ Theory
Learned historians state that ten million Christians died a martyr’s death
during the time of the heathen Roman Empire. That is during the first three
and a half centuries of the Christian era until the conversion of the Roman
These horrible atrocious cruelties committed against the Christians during
that period however were far surpassed by the carnage wrought amongst
the Christians by the Church of Rome under the Pope during the 1 260
years from 606 to 1866 AD. It is a well-known fact of history which can be
obtained from any history book and cannot be refuted in ecclesiastical
circles - that during the period of the first three and a half centuries of the
Christian dispensation, as from the day after the day of Pentecost up until
the conversion of Constantine, there was the infamous Nero amongst the
Roman emperors who was the cruellest of all. He had set Rome on fire and
blamed the Christians and subsequently the cruel slaughter of them
Those are the things I’m referring to - the terrible martyrdom of the
Christians during that period. Historians calculate that ten million Christians
laid down their lives in the most gruesome ways. Some were thrown to
lions, some were burnt at the stake, they were sported with, their sport was
the killing of Christians. Films such as Ben Hur, The Robe and Quo Vadis
portrayed these scenes in spectacular form – I need not expand on it –
there are no differences of opinion on this, it is a fact of history. It
But something that seems to be watered-down a lot is the terrible
slaughtering of the Protestants during the time of the Popes’ supremacy.
Those are also historical facts. When we’re trying to bring the Christians
into unity I would like to emphasize the fact that we should be extremely
cautious. Certainly we must draw as many as possible to the Lord but not
under false pretence.
When we look at the Bible, at the prophets and at our Lord Jesus Himself
and we look at the apostles, we’ll see that none of them made any
compromise. The Lord Jesus said for this He came into the world to testify
of the truth and that He did! When the right moment came for Him to say to
the Pharisees: “ye generation of vipers, children of the devil” then He did so
because it was necessary for that aspect of the truth to be said.
Therefore we must be very careful in these times for if we try to do the
Lord’s work in our own way, e.g. - to think, well, just to soften it a bit and to
make a little compromise - then the Lord’s blessing will not be upon us and
the Holy Spirit will not testify with us. Therefore in this study, to prove my
point I must bring the true facts to the fore from the Scriptures that we shall
be referring to in the portion we have read in 2 Thessalonians 2 as well as
the entire New Testament and all the epistles that were written in a time
when the church was already going through intense martyrdom (during
that first period of the Christian Church when ten million Christians died a
We must remember that it was during such a time that Paul, Peter and
James wrote their epistles – it was during the time when Christians were
being thrown to wild animals and burnt at the stake. Many of these letters
were written from the prisons where they were imprisoned for testifying to
the truth. From Patmos John wrote in the book of Revelation that he was
there for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Please do not be prejudiced when reading this but give yourself a fair
chance to hear the truth and against this background, to grasp the manner
in which this Rapture, as we call it, will take place.
It is estimated that directly or indirectly as a result of the persecution of the
Christians and the Protestants by the Church of Rome, fifty million lost their
lives, some of them in the most gruesome ways. We still learn today in our
history lessons of the cruel Inquisition with its torture racks and so on
where the Protestants were forced in the cruellest way to recant and return
to the Roman Church. Sometimes complete villages with men, women and
children were put to the sword of the soldiers of the Roman Church with not
a single survivor.
The Saint Bartholomew’s Night and the flight of the Huguenots from France
is part of our own South African history. Even today the Church of Rome
will still not hesitate for a moment to do the same if it has it in its power.
Only a few years ago there were people put to death in South America by
the Roman Catholic Church because they had accepted the Protestant
These gruesome atrocities opened the eyes of the old Reformers and their
predecessors and they started to point the finger at the Pope of Rome and
said ‘There is the ‘Man of Sin’ of 2 Thessalonians 2, the Antichrist’. Come
let us have a closer look at this portion of God’s Word. Bear in mind that
during this time (54 AD) the young church was already going through a
period of intense martyrdom under the cruel Roman Caesars.
