The Great Tribulation
We know that this is a topic of which there is much to be said and also
many different opinions. Nevertheless, it is a very relevant topic and I am
sure you will agree. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we should
truly search the Scriptures to see what the Lord has to say about it. As I
have often said in these Bible studies that one of the principles I learnt in
my early Christian walk, is not to ask who is right but what is right? That is
important. May the Lord give us grace to understand clearly what the Bible
has to say concerning the great tribulation!
There is great concern among people all over the world. Even the
unbelievers are becoming aware of something tremendous in the “air”.
Even as the insects and animal life know instinctively when there’s a great
storm approaching, likewise there’s awareness in mankind of something
coming. Unfortunately many have the reaction of: let’s drink and be merry,
for tomorrow we die.
In our Study on the “Rapture”, we examined the Scriptures diligently
concerning it, and likewise we are also going to look at what God’s Word
has to say about the great tribulation.
Let’s look at what the Bible says:
What Does the Bible Say?
When using a Concordance, we find the word “Tribulation” in the following
Let’s first look at:
Matthew 24: 21, 29;
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the
beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall
fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mark 13: 24;
24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light,
John 16: 33; (where the word tribulation also appears)
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have
peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I
have overcome the world.
Acts 14: 21-22;
(v22, this is always a very significant Scripture to me in a very special way.)
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had
taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and
22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to
continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation
enter into the kingdom of God.
Please read the following Scriptures:
Romans 8:35; 2 Corinthians 1:4; 2 Corinthians 7:4 1 Thessalonians 3:4:
Revelation 1:9; Revelation 2:9-10, 22; Revelation 7:14.
These are the Scriptures where the word “tribulation” appears.
The word “persecution” appears in the following:
Acts 8:1; (let’s have a look at it).
1 AND Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there
was a great persecution against the church which was at
Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the
regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2 Timothy 3:12
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
From these Scriptures we can see that tribulation of the children of God is
not only for the end times before the Second Coming of Christ, but were
experienced by the Christians in those early days already. We will not find
the expression “the Great Tribulation” as such. Jesus said for example:
“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world” (John. 16:33.)
The word “world” is derived from the Greek word “Kosmos” which also
means world – order or world – system. This persecution or tribulation of
the Christians began in the days of the New Testament. We give it far too
little consideration and therefore so many of us are so easily offended
when the world frowns on us.
It was costly to be a Christian in the days of the New Testament – it could
cost you your life. The standard has never been lowered, neither the
criterion. There has to be a testing, to try the children of God whether they
are true Christians or merely by name only.
Let us look now at the word antichrist.
In our study on the “Rapture” (please read together with this study) we
explained that the word Antichrist actually means “in the place of” as well
as opposed to and indicating that the Pope of Rome fits this description to
the finest detail. That he is truly the False Christ par excellence, and the
Man of Sin. During the period of 1,260 years (or 3 ½ times) in which he had
absolute Religious and Political supremacy, he had murdered 50 million
He therefore exceeded the cruel Roman emperors such as Nero,
Diocletian, Galerius, Maximiam, as well as Domitian, the one who banned
John to Patmos and in whose time, exceeding all these emperors, had 10
million Christians martyred to death in the cruellest ways.
For those noble deceased who are now gathered around the throne of God
and are clothed in white, it was to them, a time of great tribulation and the
cruel emperors and the Pope, who exceeded them in cruelty, were the
Can Communism exceed them in cruelty?
Can there be anything worse than to be ravished by wild animals whilst
tens of thousands look on, and applaud it, or to have your body covered in
pitch and set on fire?
So many of them were killed, martyred and murdered, that on the 5th of
May 1514 at the Lateran Ecclesiastical Council of Popes, Cardinals,
Bishops and Archbishops, Priests and Monks who gathered in great pomp
and ceremony, not a single witness for the Reformers showed up. It was
then announced: “The heretics are dead. There is no more opposition
against the church.”
They rejoiced because all the Protestants were dead, and gave each other
presents to celebrate it.
On the 31st of October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Thesis to the church
door of Wittenburg. When the Pope heard this, he said: “The Heretics are
living again in the person of Martin Luther.”
See Rev. 11:10 – for further explanation –
Please study it further in my book:” The Book of Revelation.”
Revelation 11:10
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and
make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these
two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
Now, there is also a very large interpretation concerning these two
prophets which coincide with the Futuristic point of view. Our interpretation
is totally opposed to that view point, therefore I have referred you to Rev.
11:10, but for the full explanation, read my book: “The Book of Revelation.”
This takes too long to explain. The fact that they exchanged presents was
truly fulfilled in that time.
When you read the following Scriptures, you will notice that the Antichrist
already existed in different forms, but were the same instruments in the
hands of Satan (the actual opposer of Christ).
Look at:
1 John 2:18
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that
antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists;
whereby we know that it is the last time.
1 John 2: 22
22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is the
antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son.
1 John 4:3
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus is come in the
flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye
have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the
That was in John’s time, when he wrote that letter.
2 John verses 7
7 or many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not
that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an
Here are many marks of identification whereby the Antichrist can be
recognized. I know that which I’m about to say will not be acceptable and
pleasing to many people, but I’ll mention it and you can do a complete
study in my series on the “Lost Ten Tribes of Israel”. For instance, as I’ve
pointed it out to you – that the Jew is not a true Jew, but of that strange
element which came into Judah. Here you find one of the greatest
manifestations of the Antichrist and today they are at the forefront and in
the centre of all Antichrist movements in the world. As for instance,
Communism, probably the largest manifestation of the Antichrist the world
has ever seen. They confess openly that their goal is not merely world
domination, but the annihilation of the entire Christendom.
Is that not Antichrist, it already exists and has existed, its spirit existed and
it’s different manifestations already existed in the New Testament; in the
days of the cruel Emperors when they killed all those Christians. Many of
those Christians pointed their fingers at the Emperors, and said: there is
the Antichrist of whom it was spoken. And likewise did the Reformers; they
pointed at the Pope and said: there is the Antichrist, look how he kills the
Christians. We will see more of this further on in this study.
Therefore, there is no Scriptural basis, and I want to emphasize this; there
is no Scripture to support the teaching of a terrible tyrant, a sort of
“Superman” that will appear at the end, and would be seen as the Antichrist
that will reign for a period of 3 ½ or 7 years (the period of the so-called
“Great Tribulation”). We have already seen that the great tribulation has
been part of God’s children in the days of the New Testament.
We will prove it further in this Study.
