The Law of the LORD:
This book was written as a study guide, and as I say right at the end of the
booklet, there are many more laws and aspects thereof. But this is only
given to incite you to do further scrutiny of the Scriptures and to obey it.
The LORD gave his laws to man for him to live by! The law has existed
since the creation. He intended it for man’s benefit – for his health, his
crops, and his livestock. As well as for general living and administration so
that it would go well with us in every sphere.
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony
of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple --
Our Lord Jesus said:
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: but to
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the
least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach
them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
As you surely know, it appears in the “sermon on the mount” of the entire
Matthew 5 and Matthew 6 and also a portion of Matthew 7. It is an
example to us of the ‘sermon on the mount’. Here now are a few points I
want to draw your attention to.
The Lord Jesus did not say that those that break this commandment or do
not keep it, shall be lost, this is a very important aspect, because you are
not saved by the keeping of the law, so I want to confirm that point from the
very beginning to you. Your basic salvation is not in the keeping of the law.
It was precisely Israel’s problem; we shall explain it further in the course of
this study. The human being in himself, as Israel experienced it, could not
keep the law, the law is perfect. There is nothing wrong with the law, but
there is much wrong with man, that is the problem.
There is nothing wrong with the law, we are to move away from this thought
that the Lord Jesus was in many instances [in the New Testament] against
the essence of the law; as it were with God of the Old Testament. What so
many people say; the Old Testament is now for the Old Testament days,
for a Nomadic people et cetera, a primitive civilization. We are now in the
New Testament and we are going onward, to a more civilized condition of
life. It does not look like that to me, when I look at the world around us.
I don’t know if you think that we can consider ourselves safer in this
modern world of ours, than Israel considered herself, when she was still
moving on the scene of the Bible’s story, as we read in the Old Testament.
But the matter of importance here would be that the Lord Jesus, the coming
King, who first had to come as the Lamb of God, that would take the sins of
the world upon Him. He first had to bring about reconciliation by dying on
the cross. He had to first bring about that great fundamental love for man,
to again become reconciled with his God.
For that reason He came the first time and died on the cross and arose on
the third day, and returned to heaven, where He waits to return again and
this time, to fulfil the prophecies of the Messiah, of which the prophets are
full of, and to establish the rule of God on the earth. Here He, as it were, if
you may say so, declared the Law of the Kingdom in the ‘sermon on the
mount’, when He spoke these words. This should have been very clear to
the people when Jesus declared the Law of the New Kingdom.
He said there won’t be one jot or one tittle of the law which shall ever pass
until all have come to fruition. And that “all have come to fruition” is the
perfect establishment of God’s rule on earth, and the obliterating of every
trail of sin on earth and the perfect condition on earth as God originally
purposed it. So, we still have a long way to go until that day, and until that
day Jesus said that not one jot or one tittle of the law shall pass until all
have come to fruition.
Of which law did He speak? There is only one law in God’s Word, and that
is the law that the LORD gave his people from the beginning, which we
want to analyse in fine detail for you. So, this is a very important point to
He did not say someone shall be lost if he did not keep it, He also did not
say someone shall be saved, if he did keep it, He only said the one that
breaks it and teaches other people so, shall be called the least in the
kingdom of heaven. And every one that does it and teaches it, he shall be
called great in the kingdom of heaven.
This is an important point, and I am sure, if we really believe the Bible, as I
try to encourage you to, then we should take up these words of the Lord
Jesus very seriously.
Would you not be eager to be called ‘great’ one day in the kingdom of
heaven? It is going to be such a fantastic and glorious kingdom, where all
tears will be dried, where there shall be no more trouble and distress and
sorrow. No wars, no danger, no sickness, and no death. This is a kingdom
that every one of us would gladly like to be in, and would you not like to
take up your full position in this kingdom? So this is very, very important.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the Lord Jesus always
placed the kingdom of God first. I would then remind you of the prayer the
Lord Jesus taught us, which all of us surely know, namely:
“The Our Father” – Matthew 6:9-13;
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in
heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
(This is number one!)
10 Thy kingdom come; - - - -
(This is what He taught us to pray.)
- - - - Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven;
(This is the prayer which He taught us.)
11 Give us this day our daily bread;
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is
the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever, Amen.
But what I now want to draw your attention to:
“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name” - number one!
“Thy kingdom come” – which kingdom? Is it now another kingdom the Lord
Jesus is talking about?
No, not at all. “thy kingdom come” – in other words, we are to pray for
something to come, then it is not here yet, in other words, the kingdom of
God is not yet in full working on earth today. But if you look at the world
today, this is one of the things the atheist and the freethinker has against
“What, you tell me about a God of love, look what’s going on, look at the
sickness, look at the misery, look at the terrorism, look at the wars, look at
the trouble with the colonies, oh no, I want nothing to do with such a God
that you say has supreme power.”
You know my friends, this is actually the problem. The kingdom of God has
not yet come onto the earth. That is what we are to pray for, and that is
why Jesus is coming again, to establish it. Those of you who have
attended many of my Bible studies and read my books, you will remember I
told you that to have a kingdom or any state that functions, you need
people for that state, for how else could you have a state or a kingdom?
Let us confine ourselves to the kingdom.
For a kingdom you need 3 elements, and without anyone of those three,
that kingdom cannot function.
1) You need a king, otherwise you don’t have a kingdom, and you need
a king to rule.
2) You need people over whom that king can rule.
3) You need a constitution according to which that king can rule that
These three elements are required, and that is God’s entire plan. I do not
have the time now to go into detail but you will find it right through our
message if you listen to our ‘cassettes’ and ‘read our studies’, that God is
the centre of the message of the Bible – God is King and God has in fact
never abdicated, and in the perfect restoration of all, God shall be King
again. Therefore Jesus taught us to pray – “Thy kingdom come”, naturally
after “Hallowed be thy name”. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in
earth as it is in heaven.”
As someone once said it; God’s “will” be done in heaven. In heaven there
is harmony, in the heaven God’s Laws are perfectly obeyed in nature, as
far as man could not tamper with it, e.g. the stars in their orbits, the planets,
and so forth. All function according to the Laws God laid down for them.
The Law of gravity has been worked out through all ages, and we know all
these things. You can work it out according to mathematical patterns and
formulas, because it remains constant, because it is a Law made by God.
In the heavens there is this Law, but on this earth where the LORD gave
man sovereignty, he broke God’s Laws and in many respects said to God:
“we don’t pay attention to Your Law’s. “Why does man shy away so, it is
the law, cast it away. We make our own laws. We now have parliament in
session, at this moment, with all respect, don’t think it is any criticism
against the government. Where a parliament is in session, whether in the
“White House” in America or in “Westminster Hall” in England, or wherever,
there are parliaments in session, what are they in session for? To make
Do you know that God never gave man the right to make a law! God
already made the laws. If we were in the right relationship with God, then
the LORD would have given us wisdom and the basic pattern of God’s
Laws, where upon we; in particular situations would be able to apply the
law in accordance with the ground plan of God.
